History of Van Kirk Bros. Contracting

1955

While stationed at the U.S. Army base in Fort Riley, Kansas, Jack Van Kirk meets and marries Nebraskan Carol Curtis.

1971

Jack and Carol move their family from Jack’s hometown of Sparta, New Jersey to Sutton, Nebraska. Jack works at Sutton Lumber Yard and Carol opens Midwest Sporting Goods.

1978

Van Kirk Sand & Gravel, Inc. is incorporated. Jack and sons Jim and John begin performing utility work as Van Kirk Bros. Contracting.

1982

After a special meeting of the board of directors, David Van Kirk trades his 1976 Chevrolet 4WD pickup for stock shares of Van Kirk Sand & Gravel, Inc.

1985

The company purchases a lot in Sutton and builds a 20’ x 40’ shop building to house the company’s equipment.

1993

The Van Kirks purchase a used metal building and move it to their property on Highway 6. Strong winds promptly destroy the building. The current shop at 1200 West Ash Street is then purchased.

1998

The office moves from downtown Sutton to its present location at 1200 West Ash. Jack Van Kirk “retires” but remains chairman of the board. Jim is elected president; John, vice president; David, treasurer; and Carol, secretary.

The Van Kirk family loses Jack after a lengthy battle with cancer.
